About Us
BloodSafe eLearning Australia provides online education resources for health professionals in Australia. These courses provide knowledge of patient blood management and clinical transfusion practice that can be applied in the clinical setting to improve patient outcomes. All courses are based on published guidelines, evidence-based practice and expert opinion, and provide up to date information for health professionals.
BloodSafe eLearning Australia commenced in June 2006 with proof-of-concept funding provided by the then South Australian Department of Health “to develop and implement an online learning tool suitable for knowledge credentialing of all professionals who handle blood and blood products…” in South Australia.
The first course, Clinical Transfusion Practice, was released in September 2007 for South Australian hospitals. Interest from other jurisdictions led to the course being made available for all Australian states and territories. A successful application was made to the Jurisdictional Blood Committee for national funding to enable free access by all users and to support and further develop this resource.
As a result the elearning was renamed BloodSafe eLearning Australia with expansion from one course to 41 courses and one App at present. Over 750,000 users from more than 1,500 Australian organisations have registered with BloodSafe eLearning Australia. On average there are more than 14,000 course completions per month.
Funding is currently available to June 30, 2024. It is provided by the National Blood Authority through the JBC operating on behalf of all Australian Governments.
The success of this model has been the topic of an article in the International Journal of Advanced Corporate Learning (iJAC) – Federated Governance: A Successful Model for E-Learning.
The elearning is used extensively by health regions and health related organisations including public and private hospitals and pathology providers.
BloodSafe eLearning Australia has a contract with the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood for medical editing and writing services and is endorsed by the Australian and New Zealand Society of Blood Transfusion (ANZSBT), the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) and a range of professional societies and colleges.
